End of Story

The story was already written,

Dreamed up inside my head

Blinded by “once upon a time”

Those fantasies were fed

Then time changed the outline

Let the paper rot and tear

We aged out together

“Forever more” laid bare

Tears litter our pages

Now too hard to read

Hearts trapped in ink cages

Pretending to be free

We could have had it all:

Early wedding, quick divorce

Teetering before the fall

Happiness bound to a corpse

“The End” of us is written

Ink dry and lightly smeared

Before it bleeds, unbidden

I will find a page that’s clear
